What Is a Vacuum Cleaner?
A vacuum cleaner is a type of appliance that is used to remove dust and other particles from a home. These devices were originally a luxury item, but after the Second World War, they became more affordable for a wider range of households. Today, most families have several vacuum cleaners, and they are an essential part of any household.
The basic design of a vacuum cleaner involves a fan and an intake port. The fan spins to create a flowing stream of air, which picks up dirt and debris. Once the stream of air has passed, it is directed forward by a motor to a filter. This air is filtered through the filter, then cooled by the motor, before being forced out through an exhaust port.
The motor and the fan used in most vacuum cleaners are powered by a power source, usually a battery. Most of these machines are portable, but some can be plugged into a wall outlet. They are made from metal, plastic, or a combination of these materials. Each unit is manufactured in an assembly line. There are usually several large plastic parts, including the handle, the exterior housing, and the attachments. Injection molding is typically used for these parts.
Modern vacuum cleaners are much more powerful and versatile than their predecessors. Many manufacturers now produce units with filters that are replaceable. Others have added features such as a blower and an exhaust port. Vacuum cleaners can be found in homes across the world, and many models are used to clean hardwood and tile floors.
Some modern vacuum cleaners are more convenient than their predecessors, and some have been improved to reduce allergens. For example, most manufacturers now produce lines of vacuum cleaners that are specially designed to reduce dust.
Other vacuums use an activated charcoal filter to remove odors. Some of these cleaners can also be used to clean carpets, drapes, or sinks. Some models are even robotic.
Some vacuum cleaners are equipped with soft dusting and crevice attachments. These attachments can be used to catch pet hair and insects in corners. An additional feature, a rubber band, can be affixed to the base of a vacuum to capture dusty cobwebs.
There are also vacuum cleaners that can be operated by hand. Typically, these units are portable, but they can also be affixed to the ceiling. Since they are lightweight, some of these machines are claimed to be lighter than a set of wheels.
